The Italian passion for Azzurra born with the fantastic adventure of 1983 was reignited four years later when the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda presented a second challenge for the America’s Cup.
After more than a century, the Auld Mug had left New York Yacht Club and the waters of Newport for its new home in Fremantle, Australia thanks to the surprise victory of Australia II. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda acted as Challenger of Record in Australia alongside another 12 Clubs among which figured a second Italian syndicate named Italia and as many as six American teams looking to regain the Cup after the sensational defeat of 1983.
Azzurra 3, designed once again by Andrea Vallicelli and with Mauro Pelaschier at the helm, finished eleventh in the qualifying races with four victories in 34 races, an unexpectedly poor result, particularly when compared to that obtained just four years earlier in the more tranquil waters of Newport.
The Trophy went to Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes which triumphed over the home team Kookaburra III and brought the America’s Cup promptly back to the United States.
